Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for IDPs

Concerned by the plight of the Internally Displaced People(IDP) In different camps in Nigeria, the wife of the former Governor of Ogun State, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun and three other women climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in December 2015 to raise funds towards improving the living conditions of those in camps.

Mrs. Amosun who climbed on behalf of the Wife of the President of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria, Mrs.Aisha Buhari expressed concerns over the way mothers, children and relatives were flung apart ,in various IDP camps around our nation. Several has been ripped out of their homes, torn apart from their loved ones and found themselves living in makeshift overcrowded camps for no fault of their own.

Children had been yanked out of schools by bombs, depriving them of formal education;they are traumatized from the ghastly killings they had witnessed and would benefit from love, care and psychological support to stabilize them and keep their hopes alive.

Inspired to take positive action, Mrs. Amosun and the other climbers decided that contrary to the lavish fund-raising dinners that normally entails, they would subject themselves to climbing the famous Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for those in the IDP camps in an Initiative tagged #climbwithremi.

The idea was to whip up empathy from fellow Nigerians, by making the sacrifice of climbing the highest mountain in Africa under treacherous conditions, simulating the sufferings of those in the camps in the hopes of motivating people to donate towards alleviating the sufferings of those in the camps.

In her own words,”I am troubled by the number of displaced women, children and families in the IDP camps across our nation, and thought I am comforted by the fact that our President, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, is resolute to conquer the Insurgence in our nation, I still feel the that any additional support by the citizenry towards this mission would not be out of place.”
